Yeah, get back to me when your eyes aren’t so great anymore and you need to adjust the font size. Or you use a screenreader and no one’s recorded an audiobook yet. Or if, say, you’re housebound or don’t have access to transit, but still want to check out materials from your local library. Or if you need to add a lot of annotations to a book you don’t own, and  you want to keep and/or share those annotations.

At the moment we’re fighting the DRM war and scaling the design wall in the world of ebooks and ereaders. At some point we will find our solutions, and an ebook will be so vastly superior that physical books will be relegated to art objects. That’s already happening.

This isn’t a bad thing; in a fully ebook world, our access to stories, authors, and other readers will be greater than ever. In fact, minus the shipping and distribution channels, epublishing will probably turn out to be cheaper (it isn’t yet, but that’s the cost of modifying an old industry into a new one). If it’s cheaper to publish, we may get more books we want to see, and for writers, more opportunities to reach readers.

Books might smell nice and feel good, but they take up a tremendous amount of real estate and aren’t very accessible. Having to store so many books is the reason why, if you go into your library and there’s nowhere for you to sit, that you have to wait around for ages or go find somewhere else to be. This is what happens when you prioritize physical media over accessibility, functionality, and space for people to engage with each other.
